A movement expert beyond his years, Joseph Pilates sequenced functional movement for the body using various apparatus. Such apparatus includes the Reformer and Cadillac. Yoga was developed in India more then 5,000 years ago to dedicate movement to combine the physical, spiritual and mental elements together. In more recent years yoga has also adopted the use of equipment such as straps, blocks and bolsters. Both Pilates and Yoga in our modern society often combined both practises into one class known as Yogalates.
Both Pilates and yoga offer stress-relief, flexibility, strength, control, and fitness. The biggest difference between the two is the emphasis on the spiritual component in a classes. Outside of Yogalates, most Pilates classes don’t offer an obvious spiritual and meditation experience where as a yoga class will often end with Shavasana which is a position where you lay on your back (not a nap!) in a conscious effort to keep the body relaxed and mindfully aware.
Pilates: Pilates classes focus on strength, muscle toning, body control, flexibility and core strength. Pilates is a disciplined practice that needs to be done on a regular basis to provide benefit (at least twice a week). If you like a more structured workout, using equipment to add resistants for muscle tone and strength and where breath patterns are co-ordiated with each movement to emphasis correct muscle use, then this might be the class for you!
Yoga: Yoga focuses on flexibility, balance, use of larger muscle groups, endurance, strength, spirituality and overall physical movement. Classes can range from gentle slow movements to challenging longer holds of postures. Each class has a style e.g. Hatha (class moves from one posture to another with no need for smooth transistions), Vinyasa (fluid movements, flowing from one posture to another). Yoga has no co-ordiantion of larger equipment. If you like to keep your feet on the ground to balance, flow through each position and have a deeper level of breath that connects to the mind and body then yoga is for you!
At Bodyfit Pilates and Yoga we love both styles of exercise as we feel they both compliment each other beautifully.
